UCF Burnett Biomedical Sciences Building:

Set to open in the second quarter of 2009, the 198,000 square-foot Burnett Biomedical Sciences building along with the adjacent 170,000 square-foot Medical Education building comprise the UCF College of Medicine (COM). The building is a five-story state-of-the-art equipment and research space. The mission of the school is to build nationally recognized research programs and undergraduate and graduate programs in biomedical sciences.

The Burnett Biomedical Sciences building and the Medical Education building are located on the new 50-acre UCF Health Sciences Campus at Lake Nona, located about 25 miles south of UCF's main campus and east of the Orlando International Airport. In addition to COM buildings, the surrounding development will also house the Burnham Institute for Medical Research, the Orlando VA Medical Center, Nemours Children’s Hospital and Research Campus, UF Research Facility, and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Orlando, transforming the area into a true medical city.

Site for Artwork: Tavistock Common, exterior

The selection committee has identified the Tavistock Common green space, adjacent to the building, as the ideal location for this project. The common serves as the heart of the campus and ushers visitors to the entrance of the Burnett Biomedical Sciences building through a green sylvan courtyard. It will serve not only as a refuge from the normal activities of the building, but also as a space for ceremonies and celebrations.

The common is visible and accessible from the interior of the Burnett Biomedical Sciences building and measures approximately 140,000 square feet (250 feet by 500 feet). Seating benches will be placed along the walkways and under rows of trees and plants that offer shade.

A site plan, illustrations, construction progress and a flyover of the college are on view at the UCF COM website. http://www.med.ucf.edu/about/facilities/

The Artwork: The award will go to the artist or artists who convey the spirit of what will be the premier medical school begun in the 21st century. The committee considers this an excellent site for one or more site-specific art solutions that can be integrated into the existing landscape space. The work may be designed for a specific space or function in combination with other art located at the Medical Education building, next door.

Such a unique campus, designed for a brand new medical college will be best served by work from artists whose work interacts with the environment to:
