UCF's Arts Complex II:
This is a "Call to Artists" for the first phase of the new Performing Arts Complex at the University of Central Florida. Phase One includes a state-of-the-art facility that will feature a 400-seat theatre and a 500-seat recital hall and provide a place for orchestral and recital-type performances. The new Complex will also include classrooms, rehearsal spaces, specialized production areas, as well as faculty and administrative offices for the Music and Theater Departments. The goal of the new Arts Complex is to enhance the performing arts classes and programs at UCF, and respond to the Central Florida community in attracting cultural events. (Phase Two of this project will include three performance spaces, and will be the subject of a separate Florida's Art in State Buildings project).
Site for Artwork: Exterior, common courtyard
The Arts Complex includes an exterior courtyard that will eventually be the east-end terminus of an adjacent sculpture garden area. The selection committee has identified the courtyard as an exceptional opportunity for the placement of sculpture, earthwork or a similar site-specific installation solution. The courtyard is 40,500 square feet (approximately 135 feet by 300 feet).
The courtyard is visible and accessible from the interior of the Arts Complex. It will serve not only as a refuge from normal activities of the building, but also as a practice area of spontaneous performance setting. Spaces will be set up that offer a sense of connection. These include a café, viewing balconies, pulpits, stage platforms, and group seating areas among the trees and plants that offer shade.
